Wilhelm Cortez’s Statement on Serdika Dis-tour
When did you come here?
In mid-June, because of our participation in the Water Tower festival. The Queen ov Insanity and I did a performance , called Serdika Dis-tour, in the underground Serdika ruins. We started in the ruins with the audience, and then spilt out onto the sidewalk and street to walk to Hostel Lavele. Along the way we passed at least three places with ancient ruins. |
How did you prepare this performance? The majority we did in Kuala Lumpur. We worked with a performing art school where we were free to play, explore and experiment. This was where we first touched the theater in an enclosed space where the environment can be completely controled. Previously we had only touched the street where there is absolutely no control over the environment. This helped us to develop a base, and with it go back into the street where we started |
How do you feel about the festival?
It was wonderful that we were able to feel comfortable to do our stuff on the street in front of people without having to worry about potential problems. As if there is more tradition here of spontaneously occurring events, and society is open and receptive. Once we finished the Dis-tour, we went to pick up our things and go home, but we were still in costume and in character. Along the way we met people who wanted to join and play with us. |
Why brooms?
Sweeping, the idea of cleaning a place, is a very ancient human ritual that we do every day. There are superstitions associated with brooms - the broom brings energy. |
